Sampling & Development · The Heart of Great Apparel
Every great brand starts with a single perfect sample. At Unida Sports, sampling and development is where craft meets collaboration — your vision, our mastery, refined together until the garment fits, feels, and looks exactly how you imagined it. As manufacturers, we know one truth: the pattern comes first, the sample second, and the brand third — get that order right, and everything works.

The Sample Is Everything
Where ideas become real garments
A perfect sample is the foundation of a perfect brand. It’s the moment your concept stops being a sketch and becomes something you can hold, feel, and try on. It’s where fit gets tested, fabric gets touched, colors get matched, and the soul of your brand starts to take shape. Skip the sample stage, and bulk production becomes a gamble. Invest in the sample stage — and bulk becomes a guarantee.
At Unida Sports, sampling and development is treated like the master craft it is. Senior pattern-makers with 15–25 years of experience work alongside our quality team to translate your vision into reality. We don’t rush. We don’t compromise. We build samples that brands fall in love with.
“A great sample is never accidental. It’s the result of clear specifications, patient craftsmanship, and honest collaboration between the brand and the maker.”
— The Unida Philosophy
The Manufacturer’s Truth · Pattern First, Always
Why the pattern matters more than the sample itself
Most new brands ask for the sample. Smart brands ask about the pattern. We’re manufacturers — and from inside the factory, we’ll tell you the honest truth: the sample is just the visible result of the invisible pattern beneath it. A bad pattern produces a bad sample, no matter how skilled the tailor. A great pattern produces a great sample — even with average tailoring. Pattern is everything.
The Pattern-First Method
At Unida Sports, every sample begins with hand-drafted pattern engineering by senior pattern-makers. We measure, draft, grade, and verify your pattern before a single piece of fabric is cut. This is the manufacturer’s discipline — and it’s why our samples consistently match the vision and our bulk consistently matches the sample. Brands who understand this work with us long-term. Brands who skip this stage learn the hard way.
Sampling Is a Two-Way Street
What you bring · What we bring · How we build together
What We Need From You
- A Clear Idea — even if rough. Sketches, mood boards, Pinterest references, screenshots — anything visual helps.
- Sizing Details — preferred sizing system (US, EU, UK, AU), size range, fit type (slim, regular, oversized).
- Mockups or References — front, back, side views. Photos of garments you love. Tech packs if you have them.
- Pantone Color Codes — TCX or TPX numbers. Avoid screenshots — they never match real fabric.
- Fabric Direction — cotton, polyester, fleece, French terry, etc. Don’t worry if uncertain — we guide you.
- Branding Files — logo in vector format (.AI, .EPS, .PDF, .SVG) for embroidery or print placement.
- Honest Feedback — when samples arrive, tell us exactly what’s right and what needs adjustment.
- Patience — great samples take time. Trust the process; the result is worth the wait.

But with patience, communication, and our mastery — we make it perfect together. That’s how manufacturers and brands build great products.
For New Brands · What You Actually Need to Know
Manufacturer-honest guidance for first-time founders
Know Your Garment Type First
Hoodie or tee? Lightweight or heavyweight? Streetwear or athletic? Decide your category before fabric. Category drives every other decision downstream.
Understand Your Retail Price
Selling at $40 retail? Your fabric cost should be $4–6. Selling at $120? You can afford premium 400 GSM fabric. Retail price drives fabric choice — not the other way around.
Pick a Sizing System Early
US, EU, UK, AU sizing all measure slightly differently. Pick your target market’s system early — changing sizing midway through development means redrafting patterns.
Get Real Pantone Codes
Don’t say “navy blue” — say “Pantone 19-3920 TCX”. Don’t say “off-white” — say “Pantone 11-0601 TCX”. Specific Pantone codes are the only way to guarantee color matching.
Send Vector Logo Files
JPEG screenshots of your logo cause delays. Send .AI, .EPS, .PDF, or .SVG files. If you don’t have these, our design team helps vectorize them — but vectors save 3–5 days.
Provide a Reference Garment
The single most powerful thing you can send is a physical garment you love. Mail it to us. We match the fit, fabric weight, and construction. Photos help — physical samples are gold.
Plan for Real Timelines
Sample = 10–15 days. Bulk = 7–40 days depending on size. Shipping = 5–10 days. From idea to delivered product = minimum 6–8 weeks. Plan launches accordingly.
Start With Realistic MOQ
50 pieces per style is our minimum — enough to test the market without burning capital. Don’t order 1,000 pieces of an unproven design. Test small, iterate, then scale.
Communicate Like a Partner
Daily WhatsApp updates work better than weekly emails. We respond fast. You respond fast. Decisions move quickly. The fastest brands are the most communicative ones.
The Sampling Process · A to Z
Every stage of how we build your sample
1 Discovery & Brief ReviewDay 0–1
You share everything you have — sketches, references, fabric ideas, branding files. Our team reviews the brief, identifies gaps, and asks targeted questions. No detail is too small. Clarity here saves weeks later.
2 Specification Lock-DownDay 1–2
We finalize fabric, GSM, fit, sizing, color codes (Pantone TCX/TPX), construction details, decoration method, and trims. This is the most important stage — we never proceed with vague specs because vague specs produce wrong product.
3 Tech Pack EngineeringDay 2–3
If you don’t have a tech pack, we build one. Construction sheets, BOM (Bill of Materials), measurement charts, decoration placement, label specs — everything our pattern-makers and tailors need to execute your vision.
4 Pattern Drafting & GradingDay 3–5
Our pattern-makers draft your garment from zero. Drafted by hand for accuracy, then digitized for grading across XS–5XL. Pattern is the skeleton of the garment — everything else depends on getting this right.
5 Fabric Sourcing & Color MatchingDay 4–7
We source small fabric quantities from our certified mill network. Pantone color matching is done with physical swatches — the dye lab matches your TCX/TPX codes against real fabric, not screen colors.
6 Hand Cutting & Sample SewingDay 7–10
This is where master tailors take over. Single-piece hand cutting, single-needle precision sewing, careful seam construction. Senior tailors with 15–25 years of trade experience build your sample — not bulk operators. The difference shows.
7 Decoration & BrandingDay 9–11
Embroidery digitizing, screen film burning, sublimation file prep, or DTG calibration — whichever decoration method your sample needs. Woven labels, hangtags, and neck prints are applied with retail-grade precision.
8 Quality InspectionDay 11–12
4-point QC — fabric integrity, stitching density, measurement accuracy, finish quality. Anything below standard goes back to the tailor. Only flawless samples move forward.
9 HD Photography & MeasurementDay 12–13
Full HD photos — front, back, side, close-up details. Measurement chart documented. We send everything to you before shipping so you can review virtually before the sample arrives.
10 Envío de muestrasDay 13–15
Samples ship via DHL or FedEx with tracking. Typically arrives in 3–5 business days to USA, Europe, Australia. Customs documentation handled.
11 Your Review & FeedbackOpen Loop
You inspect the physical sample. Try it on, wash it, compare to references. Send us notes — what’s perfect, what needs adjustment. Honest feedback is the gift that creates perfect bulk product.
12 Revision Round (If Needed)5–10 Days
Up to 3 free revisions are included. Adjust fit, change fabric, modify decoration, refine details — until you’re 100% confident. We never push you to approve a sample you’re not in love with.
13 Final Sample ApprovalThe Goal
Once approved, the sample becomes the master reference for bulk production. Every bulk piece is checked against this approved sample. The sample you sign off on is the product your customers receive.
The Honest Truth · What Both Sides Face
Sampling isn’t always smooth — and that’s okay
Most factories pretend sampling is effortless. We don’t. Real sampling involves challenges on both sides — yours and ours. Acknowledging them upfront is how we navigate them together.
❌ What You Face
You don’t always know exactly what fabric you want. You might describe a “soft, heavyweight feel” without knowing it’s 380 GSM French terry. That’s normal — you’re a brand owner, not a textile engineer.
✓ How We Help
We send you fabric swatches in different GSM weights so you can feel before deciding. Our team translates your descriptions into technical specs. You don’t need to learn textile vocabulary — we speak it for you.
❌ What You Face
Color references on screens look different from real fabric. The black on your laptop won’t match the black on your hoodie. Frustrating but unavoidable without proper color management.
✓ How We Help
We require Pantone TCX or TPX codes — not screenshots. Our dye lab matches Pantone references with physical fabric swatches. You see real color, not pixels, before bulk dyeing begins.
❌ What You Face
Your first sample might not feel “right” — even if it follows your tech pack exactly. Vision and reality often differ. Translating ideas into garments is harder than it looks.
✓ How We Help
That’s why revisions exist. Up to 3 free revisions per sample. We adjust fit, fabric, finish — whatever it takes. The first sample is the conversation starter, not the destination.
❌ What We Face
Sometimes specs arrive incomplete or contradictory. Fabric isn’t readily available. Decoration files don’t match brand guidelines. Sourcing rare materials takes time we didn’t budget.
✓ How We Handle It
Honest communication. If something will take longer or cost more than estimated, we tell you immediately — never hide surprises until the end. Transparency over speed, every time.
❌ What We Face
Tight deadlines tempt every factory to cut corners. Rush samples to meet your launch date, and quality suffers. Slow down for quality, and brands get frustrated by timeline.
✓ How We Handle It
We’re honest about timelines. 10–15 days for proper samples is industry standard for premium quality. Rush samples (5–7 days) are available — but we tell you upfront what gets sacrificed.
❌ What We Face
Hand-crafted samples have natural variations. Even with master tailors, two samples sewn from the same pattern can have 1–2mm differences in stitching. That’s the nature of artisan work.
✓ How We Handle It
For bulk production, we standardize using the approved sample as the master reference. Industry-standard tolerances (±0.5cm tops, ±1cm bottoms) ensure consistency across thousands of pieces.
💎 The Mastery Promise
Nothing in sampling is perfect from day one. That’s not failure — that’s the process. Through clear communication, mutual patience, and our refined craft, we transform imperfect first attempts into samples you’ll be proud to scale into thousands of garments. Mastery isn’t getting it right the first time. Mastery is getting it right, together.

Sampling & Development · Complete Technical FAQ
25+ technical question/answer pairs · Everything new brands need to know
1. Why does the pattern matter more than the sample?
The pattern is the engineered blueprint of the garment — measurements, curves, seam allowances, grading. The sample is just the visible result of executing that pattern. A great pattern produces consistent results across thousands of bulk pieces. A bad pattern produces a beautiful sample that fails in bulk. Manufacturers always think pattern-first because pattern is what scales.
2. What does it mean that “the sample comes from the pattern”?
It means the pattern is created first by senior pattern-makers — drafted by hand, graded across sizes, verified for accuracy. Only then is fabric cut from the pattern to build the sample. Skip pattern work, and you get inconsistent samples that can’t be reproduced in bulk. Pattern-first is the manufacturer’s discipline.
3. What information makes my manufacturer’s job easiest?
Three things: (1) accurate technical specs — fabric type, GSM, exact size chart, Pantone codes, decoration placement; (2) physical reference garment if possible — beats 100 photos; (3) clear communication — respond fast to questions, give honest feedback. Vague specs cause rework. Specific specs cause great product.
4. Why do manufacturers ask so many questions before sampling?
Because every unclear detail becomes a costly mistake later. We’d rather ask 10 questions upfront and spend 2 hours clarifying — than build a wrong sample and waste 10 days. Manufacturers who don’t ask questions are the ones who deliver wrong product.
5. What is a tech pack and why does it matter?
A tech pack is a complete construction blueprint — measurements, BOM (Bill of Materials), fabric specs, color codes, decoration placement, label position, packaging requirements. It’s the manufacturer’s instruction manual. Without it, samples become guesswork. We build full tech packs for new brands at no extra cost.
6. How is a pattern actually made?
Senior pattern-makers either draft from scratch (using your measurements and design) or modify an existing pattern based on your specs. Drafting is done by hand on pattern paper for accuracy, then digitized using CAD software (Lectra, Gerber) for grading. The whole process takes 2–5 days for new patterns.
7. What is pattern grading and why does it matter?
Grading is the process of scaling a base pattern up and down to create XS, S, M, L, XL, etc. Done correctly, every size fits proportionally. Done incorrectly, a small fits one customer perfectly while a large fits another customer wrong. Grading is invisible to customers but critical to retail success.
8. Can I send my own pattern files?
Yes — we accept DXF, PDF, or paper patterns. We verify and digitize them, sometimes suggesting refinements based on our manufacturing experience. If your existing pattern has issues we’ve seen before, we’ll flag them honestly.
9. How do I choose the right fabric for my garment?
Start with your garment type and target retail price. Lightweight tee for $30 retail = 160 GSM single jersey cotton. Heavyweight hoodie for $90 retail = 380 GSM French terry. We guide every new brand through this decision based on what they’re selling and at what price point.
10. What is GSM and why does it matter?
GSM (Grams per Square Meter) measures fabric weight. Lightweight tees: 140–180 GSM. Mid-weight: 220–280 GSM. Heavyweight hoodies: 380–500 GSM. GSM defines the entire feel, drape, and price of the garment. The wrong GSM = wrong product.
11. Where does Unida source fabric?
Direct partnerships with certified mills in Pakistan (cotton, fleece, terry), plus imported specialty fabrics from Turkey (premium cotton), China (technical synthetics), Italy (high-end blends), and Korea (performance fabrics). For samples, we source small quantities. For bulk, we negotiate mill-direct rates.
12. Can you source organic, recycled, or sustainable fabrics?
Yes. We work with GOTS-certified organic cotton, recycled polyester (rPET), Tencel, modal, and bamboo blends. Sustainable fabrics typically cost 15–30% more but appeal strongly to conscious consumers. Send us your sustainability requirements and we’ll source accordingly.
13. Why are Pantone codes so important?
Pantone is the only globally standardized color system. “Navy blue” means 50 different colors to 50 different people. “Pantone 19-3920 TCX” means exactly one color, anywhere in the world. Pantone eliminates the ambiguity that screen colors create.
14. What’s the difference between TCX, TPX, and TPG?
TCX = Textile Cotton eXtended (for cotton fabrics). TPX/TPG = Textile Paper eXtended/Graphics (for synthetic fabrics like polyester). U/C series = for printing inks. Send the right code for the application — TCX won’t help us print your logo accurately.
15. What if I don’t have Pantone codes?
Three options: (1) Look up Pantone codes online by name; (2) Send a physical reference object (clothing, paint chip, fabric swatch) — we color-match against physical objects; (3) Ask us to recommend Pantone codes based on your description. Just don’t send screenshots — they never match real fabric.
16. How does your dye lab match Pantone colors?
Our dye chemists mix pigments and test on actual fabric swatches under controlled lighting (D65 daylight standard). Each batch is compared against the Pantone reference using a spectrophotometer for digital verification. Approved swatches are sent to you before bulk dyeing begins.
17. What sizing system should I choose?
Pick your largest target market. Selling primarily to USA customers? Use US sizing. Europe? Use EU. UK or AU have their own systems. For global brands, US sizing is the most widely understood. We can also create custom size charts based on your specific market.
18. What measurement points do you use?
For tops: chest, waist, hip, length, shoulder, sleeve length, armhole, neck opening, hem opening. For bottoms: waist, hip, thigh, knee, leg opening, inseam, outseam, rise. We provide a complete POM (Points of Measure) chart with every sample.
19. What’s the standard fit tolerance?
Industry standard is ±0.5cm for tops and ±1cm for bottoms. Our QC team enforces these tolerances during bulk production using the approved sample as the master reference. Tolerances allow normal variation while ensuring consistent fit.
20. Can I sample multiple sizes to verify grading?
Yes — and we recommend it for new patterns. Sampling S, M, and L verifies the grading curve works correctly. Add 3–5 days to timeline. For established brands reordering known styles, single-size sampling is sufficient.
21. I’m starting a brand with no experience — where do I begin?
Start with one product, not ten. Pick the simplest version of your hero product (e.g., a basic heavyweight tee). Get that one perfect through sampling. Launch. Learn what customers want. Then expand. Brands that try to launch 8 SKUs simultaneously usually fail. Start small, master one, scale.
22. What’s the realistic budget for sampling a new brand?
Budget $200–$800 for sampling 1–3 products with revisions. Add $50–$80 for shipping samples internationally. This is your investment in getting bulk right. Skipping sampling to save $500 typically costs $5,000+ in bad bulk product.
23. How do I know if my product idea is manufacturable?
Send us your concept. We respond within 12–24 hours with feasibility — what’s possible at your price point, what fabric works, what construction techniques apply. Some ideas need adjustment to be commercially viable. We’re honest about what works and what doesn’t.
24. What’s the minimum I can order to launch a brand?
50 pieces per style is our MOQ. For a starter capsule of 3 styles in 3 colors each, that’s 450 pieces total — enough to test the market without burning capital. Successful drops get reordered; unsuccessful ones taught you what doesn’t work.
25. What stitching types do you use?
Single-needle lockstitch (clean exterior seams), double-needle topstitch (durable hems), 3-thread & 4-thread overlock (interior seam finishing), flatlock (chafe-free seams for activewear), coverstitch (stretchable hems), bartack (reinforcement points), button-hole, and zigzag. Different garments require different stitching combinations.
26. What decoration methods work for which fabrics?
Cotton: DTG (best), screen print, embroidery, plastisol heat transfer. Polyester/synthetics: sublimation (best), DTF transfer, screen print with synthetic ink. Stretch fabrics (lycra/spandex): flexible HTV vinyl, soft-hand DTF. Each fabric has decoration methods that work — and ones that fail. We match method to fabric automatically.
27. How do you handle trims (zippers, buttons, drawcords)?
YKK and SBS are our standard zipper brands — globally recognized for durability. Custom drawcords with metal or plastic tips, custom buttons (engraved metal, plastic, wood), eyelets, and rivets — all sourceable. Send us your trim specs and we source accordingly.
28. Can you do all-over print or full-garment sublimation?
Yes — primarily on polyester fabrics (the only fabric sublimation works on). All-over sublimation is perfect for MMA rash guards, performance jerseys, and sublimated streetwear. The print becomes part of the fabric with zero hand-feel and won’t crack or peel.
29. Why do samples take 10–15 days?
Real sampling involves: pattern drafting (2–3 days), fabric sourcing in small quantities (2–3 days), hand cutting and sewing by senior tailors (3–4 days), decoration setup (1–2 days), QC and photography (1–2 days). Rushed samples (5–7 days) are possible but cut corners. We’re honest about realistic timelines.
30. What does a sample actually cost?
Sample charges range from $30–$150 per piece depending on garment complexity, fabric, decoration, and sourcing. Standard streetwear tees: $40–$70. Heavyweight hoodies with embroidery: $80–$120. Sublimated MMA rash guards: $60–$90. Sample charges are typically credited toward bulk orders.
31. What payment methods do you accept for sampling?
Bank Wire (T/T) — preferred for larger sample fees. Wise Transfer — multi-currency. PayPal — best for first-time clients building trust. Western Union, Payoneer, Stripe also accepted. Currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, SGD.
32. How are samples shipped?
DHL or FedEx Express with full tracking. Typical delivery: 3–5 business days to USA, EU, UK, Australia, Canada, and Asia. We handle export documentation, HS codes, and commercial invoices. Shipping cost is typically $30–$80 depending on destination.
33. What happens after I approve the sample?
The approved sample becomes the master reference. We provide detailed bulk costing, you confirm bulk quantity and pay 30% advance, bulk production begins. Bulk timelines: 7–14 days for 50–500 pieces, scaling up from there. The sample you signed off on is the product your customers receive.
34. Do you store approved samples for future reorders?
Yes. Approved samples are physically archived in our sample room and digitally documented for life. When you reorder, we use the original approved sample as the master reference — no need to redevelop. Reorders typically ship in 7 days.
35. Will my bulk match the approved sample exactly?
Within industry tolerances (±0.5cm tops, ±1cm bottoms), yes. Our 4-stage AQL 2.5 inspection (fabric → in-line → final → pre-shipment) ensures bulk consistency. Optional third-party audits via SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek available for additional verification.
