The Science Behind Permanent, Vibrant Prints
Dye sublimation is an advanced printing process that uses heat to transfer dye directly into polyester
fabric fibers at the molecular level. Unlike screen printing where ink sits on top of fabric, sublimation
dye becomes part of the fabric itself — resulting in prints that never crack, peel, or
fade, even after hundreds of wash cycles.
The process works like this: Your design is first printed onto special transfer paper using sublimation
inks. The paper is then placed against polyester fabric and subjected to high heat (around 400°F/200°C)
and pressure. The heat causes the solid dye to convert directly into gas (sublimate) without becoming
liquid, and the gas permeates the polyester fibers. When cooled, the dye returns to solid form — now
permanently embedded inside the fabric structure.

From Digital File to Permanent Print
Our 6-step sublimation process ensures vibrant, long-lasting prints every time
Design File Preparation
You provide artwork files (AI, PSD, PDF, or high-res PNG/JPG). Our pre-press team prepares
files for printing: color separation, resolution optimization, pattern tiling for all-over
prints, and precise placement mapping. We send you digital mockups for approval showing
exactly how designs will appear on finished garments.
Transfer Paper Printing
Designs are printed onto special sublimation transfer paper using wide-format printers
loaded with OEKO-TEX certified sublimation inks. Print resolution: 1440 DPI for
photo-realistic quality. Colors are slightly adjusted during printing to account for
the chemical transformation that occurs during heat transfer.
Fabric Preparation
Polyester or polyester-blend fabrics are cut to pattern specifications. Fabric must be
at least 50% polyester for sublimation to work (higher polyester content = more vibrant
colors). White or light-colored fabrics work best as sublimation cannot print white —
the fabric color shows through as “white” areas.
Heat Press Transfer
Transfer paper is positioned precisely on fabric, then placed in industrial heat press.
Temperature: 390-400°F (200-205°C). Pressure: 40-60 PSI. Time: 45-90 seconds depending
on fabric weight. The heat causes solid dye particles to convert directly into gas, which
penetrates the polyester fibers. No liquid phase = no bleeding or smudging.
Cooling & Paper Removal
After heat pressing, fabric cools for 30-60 seconds, allowing the gaseous dye to return
to solid form — now permanently embedded inside the polyester molecular structure. Transfer
paper is carefully peeled away, revealing the finished print. The print is now part of the
fabric, not sitting on top of it.
Quality Check & Garment Assembly
Every printed panel is inspected for color accuracy, complete transfer coverage, and
print quality before moving to cutting and sewing. Printed fabric panels are then assembled
into finished garments with precise pattern matching across seams. Final wash test sample
confirms colorfastness before bulk shipment.
Sublimation vs. Other Printing Methods
🎨 Unlimited Color Complexity
Sublimation: Unlimited colors, gradients, photographic images, complex patterns —
all at the same cost.
Screen Printing: Each color requires separate screen setup ($50-100 per color).
Complex designs become extremely expensive.
💪 Durability & Longevity
Sublimation: Print is inside the fabric. Never cracks, peels, or fades. Lasts
as long as the garment itself.
DTG/Screen Print: Ink sits on surface. Can crack, fade after 20-30 washes,
especially with heavy use.
🏃 Breathability & Comfort
Sublimation: No extra layer on fabric. Maintains full breathability,
stretch, and moisture-wicking properties. Ideal for athletic wear.
Screen Print: Ink layer blocks fabric pores. Reduces breathability and
adds stiffness to print areas.
📐 All-Over Print Capability
Sublimation: Can print edge-to-edge on entire garment surface before assembly.
Perfect for all-over patterns.
Screen Print: Limited to flat areas. Cannot print across seams or on already-assembled
garments with same quality.
⚡ Production Speed
Sublimation: No setup time per color. Can start printing immediately. Fast
for small-medium runs (100-1000 pieces).
Screen Print: Requires screen setup time. Better for very large runs (5000+ pieces)
where setup cost is amortized.
🌍 Eco-Friendliness
Sublimation: Water-free process. No chemical waste. OEKO-TEX certified inks.
Minimal environmental impact.
Screen Print: Requires water for cleanup, chemical emulsions for screens,
and ink disposal management.
⚠️ Important Limitation to Know
Sublimation only works on polyester or polyester-blend fabrics (minimum 50% polyester).
It cannot print on 100% cotton. Also, sublimation cannot print white — white areas
in your design will show the fabric color underneath. For dark-colored garments, colors appear muted.
Best results on white or light-colored polyester fabrics.

Sublimation Printing Questions Answered
Can sublimation print on 100% cotton t-shirts?
No. Sublimation only works on polyester or polyester-blend fabrics (minimum
50% polyester content). The dye bonds specifically with polyester molecules, not cotton. For
100% cotton garments, we recommend screen printing or DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing instead.
However, for athletic wear and performance clothing, polyester is actually preferred due to its
moisture-wicking properties, durability, and stretch — making sublimation the ideal printing
method for sportswear.
Will sublimation prints crack or peel after washing?
Absolutely not. This is sublimation’s biggest advantage. Because the dye becomes
part of the fabric fibers at the molecular level (not sitting on top like screen print ink), it
cannot crack, peel, or fade. We’ve tested sublimated garments through 100+ industrial wash cycles
with zero visible deterioration. The print will last as long as the garment itself. You can wash
in hot water, use bleach (not recommended but won’t damage print), machine dry on high heat — the
print remains vibrant and intact.
Can you print white designs or white text with sublimation?
No, sublimation cannot print the color white. White areas in your design will show the fabric
color underneath — so on white fabric, white design areas appear as blank white fabric. This is
because sublimation is a dye, not an ink. It adds color to fabric but cannot remove or cover
existing color. For designs requiring white elements, we recommend: (1) Design
around this limitation — use fabric color as white, (2) Use white or light-colored
base fabrics, or (3) Combine sublimation with screen printing (sublimate main
design, screen print white elements separately).
What file format do you need for sublimation printing?
We accept: Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) — best for logos and text, infinitely
scalable without quality loss. High-resolution raster files (PSD, PNG, TIFF) —
minimum 300 DPI at actual print size. For large all-over prints, 150 DPI acceptable but 300 DPI
preferred. Photos/complex images: JPG at highest quality, minimum 300 DPI.
Color mode: RGB or CMYK (we’ll convert). Provide Pantone references for critical
color matching. Don’t have print-ready files? Send us your images/mockups and we’ll prepare files
for an additional $25-50 design prep fee.
Is sublimation printing eco-friendly and safe?
Yes! Sublimation is one of the most environmentally friendly printing methods: No water
usage (dry heat process), No chemical waste (unlike screen printing
which requires cleaning chemicals), OEKO-TEX certified inks — tested safe for
direct skin contact, suitable for baby/children’s clothing, EU REACH compliant —
free from restricted substances, Minimal waste — only transfer paper is discarded,
which is recyclable. The inks contain no heavy metals, phthalates, or harmful VOCs. Completely
safe for people with sensitive skin.
